If you've ever left home and opened a camera app five minutes later “just to check,” you probably already understand the appeal of the Tapo C104.
Sometimes it's security. Sometimes you're waiting for a delivery. And sometimes, if you're me, you just want to make sure your cat hasn't found a new way to rearrange the house while you're gone.
The C104 is made for exactly this kind of everyday monitoring, with 1080p video, color night vision, motion and person detection, and local storage without requiring a subscription for the core features.
For a small camera, it covers quite a lot without making things complicated.
Quick Take
What you want to know | The short answer |
Is the video quality good? | Yes, especially for everyday monitoring |
Can I use it outside? | Yes, it's IP65 weatherproof |
Do I need a subscription? | No |
Can I save recordings locally? | Yes, up to 512GB microSD |
Does it detect people and motion? | Yes |
Does it have two-way audio? | Yes |
For Everyday Monitoring, It Covers a Lot
The C104 gives you 1080p video, color night vision, two-way audio, and an IP65 weatherproof design, so you can use it inside or outside. I'm happy with the picture quality, including at night.
For me, though, local storage is one of the biggest selling points.
You can add a microSD card up to 512GB and keep recordings locally. Tapo Care is available if you want cloud storage, but you don't need a subscription for the core camera features.
And I appreciate that. I already have enough tiny monthly subscriptions quietly eating away at my bank account.
If I can check who's outside, see what triggered a motion alert, and confirm my cat is merely sleeping rather than destroying something, the camera is doing most of what I'd buy it for.
The Smart Features Are a Nice Extra
Beyond basic monitoring, the C104 also includes person and motion detection, giving you more useful alerts than simply recording everything that happens in front of the camera.
Buyer feedback isn't perfect across every smart feature, with some mentions of false alerts or occasional connectivity issues. But for me, that doesn't really change the main appeal.
I'm here for a camera that lets me check what's happening at home, tells me when something moves, and saves the footage without another monthly bill. Everything else feels like a bonus.
Is the Tapo C104 Right for You?
You'll probably like it if you...
🏠 Want a simple camera for everyday monitoring, whether that's your home, garage, yard, pets, or front door.
💾 Prefer local storage instead of paying for cloud recording every month.
🌙 Want to check what's happening after dark. Color night vision makes it useful beyond daylight hours.
📱 Already use Tapo products and want another camera inside the same app.
You may want to look elsewhere if you...
☁️ Want cloud storage included for free. Tapo Care is optional, but it is a paid service.
📶 Expect every smart alert to be perfect. Buyer feedback includes occasional false alerts and connectivity issues.
My Take
With a 4.3-star rating across 419 customer ratings, the Tapo C104 feels like a solid choice if what you want is a straightforward camera without another required monthly fee.
It covers the everyday stuff well, and honestly, that's probably what I'd use 90% of the time anyway.
And YES, checking whether my cat has moved from the same spot in four hours absolutely counts as home monitoring.
